Your Simple Guide to Hippius (SN75)

Published February 4, 2026

As AI applications grow in complexity and scale, the need for reliable, affordable, and censorship-resistant data storage becomes critical. Traditional cloud providers like AWS, Google Cloud, and Dropbox offer convenience. However, they come with centralized control, opaque pricing, and potential data vulnerabilities. Hippius addresses these challenges by delivering a decentralized cloud storage platform built on Bittensor. Specifically, it combines blockchain transparency with practical file storage solutions that anyone can use.

What is Hippius?

Hippius is a decentralized cloud storage subnet operating as Subnet 75 within the Bittensor ecosystem. It provides transparent and secure alternatives to traditional centralized cloud services. Unlike conventional providers, Hippius runs on a custom Substrate blockchain that maintains a complete record of network activities, incentives, and node performance.

The platform offers two primary storage solutions. First, IPFS pinning provides fully decentralized, content-addressed storage with blockchain-managed persistence. Second, S3-compatible object storage enables developers and enterprises to migrate from traditional cloud providers without rewriting application code. As a result, users can choose the right solution for their needs while benefiting from decentralization.

Hippius positions itself as the persistent memory layer of Bittensor. While other subnets focus on AI training, inference, and compute, Hippius provides the infrastructure where datasets, model checkpoints, and application data can live reliably. The official documentation describes it as the storage solution for Bittensor, delivering decentralized file hosting underpinned by blockchain trust.

How Hippius works?

Hippius operates through a network of miners, validators, and a custom Substrate blockchain that coordinates all storage activities. The architecture combines on-chain transparency with off-chain storage technology, creating a practical decentralized storage system.

Storage miners provide the physical storage capacity by running IPFS nodes or S3-compatible storage volumes. When users upload files, the system enforces triple redundancy by default, ensuring that each file is stored across at least three independent miners. Meanwhile, validators continuously monitor miners for performance, availability, and response speed using on-chain scoring logic.

Validators also assign storage tasks, verify that data remains properly maintained, and report performance metrics back to the Bittensor main chain. The blockchain uses BABE (Blind Assignment for Blockchain Extension) for consensus and Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS) for security. As a result, validators produce blocks and finalize the chain while token holders stake to secure the network.

The economic model integrates directly with Bittensor through Dynamic TAO. The native currency on the Hippius chain is Alpha. Users can convert between Alpha and TAO via an automated market maker that prices assets based on supply and demand. Miners earn 60% of storage fees for maintaining data, while validators receive a portion of the 30% allocated to network security, aligning incentives with service quality.

Who is behind it?

The Nerve Lab developed and launched Hippius. The team built the subnet’s core codebase and manages infrastructure deployment. During development, the project operated under the codename “The Brain”, reflecting its role as the memory layer of Bittensor’s decentralized AI network.

All core components of Hippius are open-sourced on GitHub, ensuring transparency and encouraging community participation. Key repositories include the Hippius blockchain node built with Rust Substrate, which contains custom pallets for the storage and compute marketplace. Additional repositories provide miner scripts, validator configurations, and CLI tools, allowing anyone to join the network.

Community members Mog and Dubs actively present and explain Hippius through podcasts and ecosystem discussions. The team also maintains an active presence on Discord and Twitter, coordinating development updates and supporting new participants. Hippius operates as a community-driven, GPL-3.0 open-source project, allowing anyone to audit and contribute to the code.

Why it is valuable?

Hippius delivers core infrastructure utility to the Bittensor ecosystem by solving the problem of persistent data storage. AI systems require reliable storage for training datasets, checkpoints, and outputs. Without a decentralized solution, other subnets would depend on centralized cloud providers, undermining Bittensor’s principles.

The platform offers competitive, usage-based pricing with all credits recorded on-chain for full transparency. By removing centralized data center overhead and enabling a competitive storage marketplace, Hippius keeps costs low while maintaining quality. Users can pay using TAO, Alpha, or fiat via Stripe integration.

Transparency is a key differentiator. Every storage request, transaction, and miner performance metric is publicly verifiable on the blockchain. There are no hidden fees or opaque pricing models.

Since its March 2025 launch, Hippius has demonstrated real traction. The subnet token was listed on MEXC in October 2025, expanding accessibility. A Dropbox-like desktop application is in development, while the web console already supports file uploads, payments, and account management.

Security is reinforced through mnemonic-based authentication, giving users direct control over identity and encryption keys. Users can choose between public or encrypted storage, and an advanced authorization system links blockchain addresses to granular data permissions.

The future of Hippius?

The Hippius roadmap extends beyond storage into decentralized cloud computation, including virtual machines and web application hosting. In future phases, compute miners will offer VMs and containerized environments, transforming Hippius into a full Web3 cloud platform.

Integration with other Bittensor subnets presents major opportunities. AI-focused subnets can store and retrieve large models and datasets directly through Hippius, strengthening the ecosystem through shared infrastructure services.

Ongoing development includes governance tooling, slashing mechanisms for underperforming miners, and affiliate-driven application growth. Planned WordPress integrations will further lower the barrier for mainstream developers and content creators.

The long-term vision positions Hippius as a Web3 standard for cloud storage. By combining competitive pricing, blockchain transparency, and native Bittensor integration, Hippius aims to rival centralized cloud providers and support the growing demand for decentralized AI infrastructure.
